What Happens If Your Rego Expires in NZ?

We’ve All Been There

Picture this: you’re running late for school drop-off, you’ve barely had a coffee, and a police officer pulls you over for a routine check. They glance at your windscreen and ask, “Did you know your registration expired three weeks ago?”

Your stomach drops. You meant to renew it. The reminder letter is probably buried under a pile of mail on the kitchen bench. Now you’re looking at a fine, a lecture, and a very bad start to your Tuesday.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Thousands of Kiwis drive around with an expired rego in NZ every year — most of them without even realising it. But the consequences can be surprisingly harsh. Let’s break down exactly what happens, what it costs, and how to make sure it never catches you off guard again.

What Happens Legally If You Drive With Expired Rego in NZ?

In New Zealand, vehicle registration (rego) isn’t optional — it’s the law. Under the Land Transport Act 1998, every motor vehicle driven or parked on a public road must have a current registration and licence (that little label on your windscreen).

If your rego has lapsed in NZ, here’s what you need to know:

  • You cannot legally drive the vehicle on any public road. Not even “just down to the shops.”
  • You cannot park it on a public road. Yes, even if it’s just sitting there. A parked vehicle with expired rego on a public street can still cop a ticket.
  • Police and parking wardens actively check for this. ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras mounted on police cars scan plates constantly. If yours flags as expired, expect to be pulled over.

There’s no grace period. The moment your rego expires, you’re unlicensed — and that’s an offence.

Fines and Penalties for Driving Without Rego in NZ

So what’s the damage? Here’s what you’re looking at if you get caught driving without rego in NZ:

Instant Infringement Fine

The standard fine for no rego is $200, issued as an infringement notice on the spot. No warnings, no “I’ll let you off this time.” It’s an automatic fine.

Your Vehicle Can Be Towed or Impounded

If your rego has been expired for a significant period — or if there are other issues (like no WoF) — police can have your vehicle towed and impounded. You’ll then have to pay towing fees and storage costs on top of the fine just to get your car back. That “saving” from not renewing rego suddenly looks very expensive.

Your Insurance Might Not Cover You

This is the one that really stings. Many insurance policies in New Zealand include a clause that the vehicle must be legally roadworthy and registered. If you’re in an accident while driving with expired rego, your insurer may decline your claim.

Think about that for a moment. You crash into someone’s brand-new Tesla, and because your rego was three weeks overdue, you could be personally liable for tens of thousands of dollars. It’s a risk that’s simply not worth taking.

Penalties Stack Up

If your WoF has also expired (which often happens at the same time), that’s another $200 fine. Driving without rego and without a WoF? That’s $400 in fines before you’ve even thought about renewal costs. And if it goes to court (for repeat offences or long-lapsed registrations), fines can climb significantly higher.

How to Check Your Rego Expiry Date

Not sure when your rego runs out? It takes about 30 seconds to find out.

The quickest way: Use the official NZTA rego expiry checker. Just pop in your plate number and it’ll tell you exactly when your registration and WoF expire.

You can also check by:

  • Looking at your windscreen label — the expiry month and year are printed on it.
  • Checking past emails or letters from NZTA — they send renewal reminders, but these are easy to miss.
  • Using the BONNET app — which pulls your rego and WoF data automatically and sends you reminders before they expire (more on that below).

How to Renew Your Rego Online

Renewing is straightforward and you can do it from your couch. Here’s how:

  1. Make sure your WoF (or CoF) is current. You can’t renew your rego if your Warrant of Fitness has expired. Get that sorted first.
  2. Head to the NZTA website or use their online transaction portal.
  3. Enter your plate number and follow the prompts.
  4. Pay online — you can renew for 3, 6, or 12 months.
  5. Your new label arrives in the mail within a few days. In the meantime, your vehicle is registered in the system, so you’re legal to drive.

You can also renew at any AA centre, PostShop, or approved vehicle testing station.

Pro tip: If your rego has been expired for more than 12 months, you’ll need to re-register the vehicle, which involves a fresh inspection and more paperwork. Don’t let it get to that point.

How to Never Forget Again — That’s Where BONNET Comes In

Let’s be honest — most people don’t forget their rego because they’re irresponsible. Life just gets busy. The reminder letter gets lost. You tell yourself you’ll do it tomorrow. And then suddenly you’re three weeks past due and staring at a $200 fine.

That’s exactly why we built BONNET.

BONNET is a free vehicle management app made right here in New Zealand. It keeps track of your rego, WoF, and other important vehicle dates — and sends you reminders before they expire. No more guessing, no more kitchen-bench letter piles, no more nasty surprises.

An expired rego in NZ isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a financial risk. Between the $200 instant fine, the possibility of your car being towed, and the very real chance your insurance won’t pay out if something goes wrong, it’s one of those things that’s just not worth leaving to chance.

The good news? It’s completely avoidable. Check your rego today, renew if you need to, and set yourself up with BONNET so you never have to think about it again.
